Culture and body language:
I’ve only been in Japan for a few years, but I’m still learning new things every day. For example, in many cultures, showing a “thumbs up” gesture means“good” or “yes” . But what do you think a “thumbs down” gesture means? For me, it just means “bad” or “no”, but in Japan, it means something much more serious. Instead, in Japan, you should cross your hands when you mean “no”. I was very surprised to learn this. And my students were surprised too! Haha. We should learn as much as we can about other people’s cultures and be careful not to create misunderstandings. Do you know any gestures that are okay in Japan but not in another country?
