9-7 Journal – A Hurricane in my hometown
Hey, everyone! Have you watched the news recently? Did you see the hurricane in Texas? This hurricane, called Hurricane Harvey, hit my hometown, Houston, on August 25th. It was like a typhoon in Japan. It was very rainy and windy. The wind became very strong, blowing about 212 km/hour! The rain didn’t stop for about six days! Some areas had 132cm of rain!
Many people had to leave their homes because the water was too high. A few of my friends had to do that. Most of my family and friends didn’t. At the rain’s highest point, about 1150km² was under water. Osaka city is about 223km². Osaka prefecture is about 1899km².
The rainwater is mostly gone now, but there is a lot of work that has to be done. My family and friends are OK, but many people now have to repair their homes. The people of Houston helped each other during the storm, and they are helping each other now too. I was sad to see my hometown in trouble, but I am happy to see everyone is working hard together.

Questions:
1. Have you ever seen a flood in Osaka? How high was the rainwater?
2. Are hurricanes and typhoons scary to you? Why or why not?
