Last week I wrote about Jack o’ Lanterns. Do you know why they are called Jack o’ Lanterns? The name comes from an old story from Ireland. It is a story about a man named Stingy Jack. Jack was a very bad man and so one day the Devil came to take his soul. Jack asked the devil if he could have an apple and so the devil climbed a tree to get one. Jack carved a cross on the tree and cross trapped the devil in the tree. Jack promised that he would let the Devil go if he did not take his soul. The Devil agreed and Jack let him go. When Jack finally died, he could not go to heaven because he was so bad, so he went to hell. However, the devil would not let him into hell, because he promised to never take Jack’s soul. Instead, the devil gave jack a piece of coal. Jack put the coal in a pumpkin lantern and now he wanders the earth with the lantern. People started calling him “Jack of the Lantern” or “Jack o’ Lantern.”
