On Monday I went to the supermarket next to the school to buy lunch. I was very surprised because the supermarket had changed since the last time I was there. There was a new “バイキング” where you can choose the food you want and make your own lunch. I have always found the Japanese word “バイキング” to be very interesting. It comes from the English word “Viking.” But the English word “Viking” is very different from the Japanese word. In English a Viking is a warrior from Scandinavia, it is not used to talk about food. In English we say “buffet” for a restaurant where you can serve yourself food. I don’t know why Japanese people started to say “Viking” instead of “buffet.” Maybe because Viking warriors eat a lot of food and take as much as they want.
