Year 9 Students Take On the Public High School Entrance Exam — Year 7 Gathers to Reflect on the Power of Words
Today, our Year 9 students sat for the public high school general entrance examination. Many students are giving their very best as they work toward their individual goals. We are keeping our fingers crossed that they can trust in all the hard work they have put in and perform with confidence.
Meanwhile, back at school, a Year 7 assembly was held in the gymnasium. With chairs already neatly arranged for the upcoming graduation ceremony, the hall carried a sense of occasion quite different from an ordinary school day.
The assembly opened with a talk about what makes Hokuryō Junior High School special. A teacher shared a memory from shortly after first arriving at the school: during preparations for the entrance ceremony, a student he had never met before approached him and said, "I'm sorry I didn't notice you right away, Sir." That small, spontaneous act of courtesy left a lasting impression. The student later went on to become a professional baseball player — Katsuda. The teacher spoke of how Katsuda's greatness lies not only in his athletic talent but, more importantly, in his character as a person, something the whole school can be proud of.
The talk then moved to the art of cherry blossom dyeing, introducing the idea that during this season, it is not just the blossoms but the entire cherry tree that takes on a soft pink hue. From there, the teacher drew a parallel to language: our words reveal not just what is on the surface, but who we truly are on the inside. Because even a casual remark can reflect our thoughts and character, students were encouraged to treasure the beauty of their words.
Drawing on neuroscience, the teacher also explained that harsh or hurtful language affects not only the person on the receiving end but also the speaker. Paying attention to the words we choose is, in a very real sense, a way of taking care of ourselves.
To close, the teacher reflected on how the Year 9 students' singing had carried a power that moved hearts, precisely because their words and expression were filled with genuine feeling. As Year 7 students prepare to step into the role of senior students, they were encouraged to carry forward the proud traditions of Hokuryō and to be role models that the incoming students can look up to.
The whole school is cheering on our Year 9 students today, while Year 7 is already climbing the first steps toward becoming upper-year students. As graduation and the new school year approach, Hokuryō Junior High School moves forward — with warmth and with purpose. We are deeply grateful for the continued support of our families and community, and we kindly ask you to keep watching over our students as they grow.
