Look at the picture above. Do you know who it is? It’s the Billiken (ビリケン). Do you know where he comes from? He is not from Japan. The Billiken is from my home, Missouri, in the USA. The Billiken was created by a school teacher named Florence Pretz. It became a popular toy around the world. A Billiken would bring you good luck if you bought one, or you could get better luck if someone gave you a Billiken as a present. Now the Billiken is popular in Osaka and Saint Louis, Missouri only. In Osaka he is at the top of Tsutenkaku tower. In Missouri he is the mascot for Saint Louis University’s basketball team.
