　Look at the picture. Do you know what this is? It is a pumpkin lantern, or Jack o’ Lantern. People often make them for Halloween. They are made by carving pumpkins, or other large vegetables, and then putting a candle inside. People put them outside the door or in the windows of their house to scare bad spirits. The bad spirits are afraid of the scary face on the lantern, so they will not come into the house. So even though a Jack o’ Lantern might look very scary, they are actually helpful for protecting people on Halloween.
