Rare Historical Photos / Getty Images)

School Assembly: "The Timeless and the Changing" Part 2 — Knocker-Uppers and Japan's 104 Directory Service
On Monday, March 17, our first- and second-year students gathered in the gymnasium for a whole-school assembly. With the third-year students having graduated just last Friday, the gym felt a little more spacious than usual. Students noticed their own voices echoing more clearly off the walls — a small but unmistakable reminder that their seniors had moved on.
The principal continued a theme from the previous assembly: "Fueki to Ryūkō" — a concept from the poet Matsuo Bashō meaning "the timeless and the changing." This time, the focus was on "Ryūkō" — the things that change with the times — illustrated through two fascinating real-world examples.
The first was the Knocker-Up, a profession that once existed in Britain. Before affordable alarm clocks, people were hired to walk the streets each morning, tapping on bedroom windows with long poles to wake workers in time for their shifts — a true "human alarm clock." As inexpensive clocks became widely available, the profession quietly disappeared. The second example hit closer to home: Japan's 104 telephone directory service. Since 1890, callers could dial 104 to have an operator look up a phone number by name and address. After more than 130 years of service, it will officially end on March 31 of this month, as the widespread use of smartphones and the internet has led to a sharp decline in demand.
The principal also shared an encouraging message: while some jobs disappear, many new ones are born in their place. Most importantly, he reminded students that certain things remain unchanged no matter how far technology advances — connecting with others face to face, thinking for yourself, and showing empathy. These, he said, are qualities that no AI can replace.
With just four days until the closing ceremony, students will soon step into new school years. They listened intently, taking in the message to embrace change while holding on to what truly matters.
We are deeply grateful to our parents and community members for your continued understanding and support. As this school year draws to a close, our staff will continue to ensure that every student feels safe and supported through these final days.
