Our First "Yutori Day" of the Year
On Friday, April 24, we held our very first Yutori Day at Hokuryō Junior High School. This is a new initiative starting this academic year, with one designated Friday each month set aside as a half day — students attend four periods of classes, have lunch, and then head home.
The idea draws on guidance from Japan's Ministry of Education, which highlighted the importance of creating breathing room for both students and teachers. The Osaka City Education Plan also places a strong emphasis on improving work-life balance for school staff. With these principles in mind, our school decided to put Yutori Day into practice.
For teachers, the afternoon provides valuable time for lesson preparation, curriculum research, and gaining a deeper understanding of each student's needs. We believe this investment will be reflected in the quality of everyday classes and the care students receive. For students, having one afternoon a month with extra free time opens up opportunities for studying at home, reading, pursuing hobbies, or simply spending time with family.
Watching students leave after lunch today, there was a noticeable spring in their step. Those involved in club activities were also able to get an earlier start than usual. Please note that even on Yutori Day, all students in club activities must leave school by 5:00 p.m.
Regarding class hours, any time missed on Yutori Day will be made up with a sixth-period class on a Wednesday within the same month, so the total number of class hours for the year remains unchanged. For April and May, sixth-period classes are scheduled for Wednesday, May 13 (Special Activities). Dates for June onward will be shared through grade-level newsletters as soon as they are confirmed.
We received feedback from some families that they would have appreciated more advance notice. Because the plan was formally approved at our April staff meeting, there was limited time before the first Yutori Day to distribute the announcement. We sincerely apologize for the short notice and will make every effort to inform families earlier going forward.
