First-Year Students Explore Their Muscle Type in a Cloud-Based Research Lesson
On Monday, March 9, 2026 (4th period), a research lesson in health and physical education was held for the first-year girls in Classes 1 and 2. An advisory instructor from the Osaka City Education Center joined us to observe and offer guidance as part of our ongoing efforts to enhance teaching quality.
The lesson's central question was: "Based on your 12-minute run and 50-meter dash records, is your muscle type built for speed or stamina?" Bridging long-distance running in PE with sports science theory, students examined their own physical characteristics using their past performance data. The lesson opened with a discussion connecting the Olympic Games to the idea that sports have evolved through science.
What stood out most was how fully the lesson made use of a cloud-based learning environment. Students used their tablets to enter their 50-meter dash and 12-minute run records into a shared spreadsheet in Google Classroom, then calculated the ratio of fast-twitch to slow-twitch muscle fibers and recorded which muscle type they matched on their worksheets. When the results — collected in real time via Google Forms — appeared on the large screen at the front of the room, the classroom buzzed with excitement.
The data showed that roughly 72% of the class fell into the speed type, while about 28% were the balanced type. Students then considered what sports might suit their personal muscle profile, wrote down three ideas on their worksheets, and shared them with the whole class. Being able to look at their own bodies through objective numbers was a meaningful experience that we hope will inform the way they approach sports and training going forward.
We are grateful to the advisory instructor from the Osaka City Education Center for taking the time to visit and share valuable feedback. Our teaching staff will continue working together to deliver the best lessons we can. As always, we appreciate the warm support of our families and community.
