Title: All-School Assembly — The Principal's Talk on "What It Means to Be Companions"
On Tuesday, May 19, we held our all-school assembly. First-year students depart tomorrow, and second-year students the day after, for their Nature Experience Program (overnight stay) in the Miyazu area of Kyoto Prefecture. For third-year students, who will soon set out on their school trip, today's talk carried much the same meaning.
The principal spoke about one of the three aims of the Nature Experience Program in particular: building stronger companionship and a better class community.
He began by suggesting that "friends" and "companions" are similar, yet subtly different. Friends, he explained, are people we naturally get along with — those whose company simply feels easy and enjoyable. Companions, on the other hand, are those who may differ in personality or interests, yet walk together toward the same goal.
A class today is not a group the students chose for themselves; it is a gathering of people who happened to meet through class assignment. That is precisely why, during the Nature Experience Program — sharing meals, sharing rooms, and dividing roles within their groups — students are likely to find themselves thinking: "I didn't know this side of them," or "When I was in trouble, this person helped me out."
To recognize one another's differences, and still work together toward a common goal — this is deeply connected to the words our school holds dear: "Cherish yourself. Cherish the person beside you." Our hope is that students return home after three days feeling that their class has become just a little warmer, a little easier to be in, than when they set off.
Following the principal's talk, the chairs of the Student Life Committee and the Information Committee each addressed the whole school. Watching them convey their own activities in their own words, we sense the steady growth of a true spirit of student self-governance. Committee activities are an important driving force for improving school life. We look forward to seeing the whole student body respond to their chairs' messages, and we will continue to support these dependable students with quiet confidence.
Throughout the assembly, students sat a little straighter, listening attentively with expressions that reflected their anticipation of the days ahead. With careful attention to safety and well-being, we will do our utmost to make this learning experience a meaningful one. We kindly ask families for their support with departure preparations, and hope you will see your children off with warm encouragement.
