Deepening Learning Through Research Lessons — Year 8 Maths and Social Studies
On Tuesday, 26 May, research lessons were held in our Year 8 classrooms. During Period 3, Class 2-4 opened a mathematics lesson on solving simultaneous equations, and during Period 5, Class 2-3 opened a social studies lesson on "The Development of Transport and the Prosperity of the Three Cities."
The mathematics lesson began with a familiar problem — finding the price of apples and oranges — as a gateway into the core idea of solving simultaneous equations by "eliminating" a variable. Through group discussion, students engaged with the challenge of "explaining it so that even a primary school pupil could understand," moving back and forth between diagrams and equations to put the solving process into their own words.
The social studies lesson focused on the Five Highways of the Edo period and the development of the three great cities — Edo, Osaka, and Kyoto. Reading maps and historical materials, students considered why daimyo, merchants, and couriers each travelled towards Edo, and explored how the growth of transport networks expanded the movement of people and goods. It was also a chance to rediscover the history of Osaka — their own home city — as the "Kitchen of the Nation," once linked to every corner of Japan.
In both lessons, the electronic blackboard was used effectively, playing an important role in displaying diagrams and materials and in sharing students' ideas. With information organised visually, students deepened their own thinking while weaving in the perspectives of their classmates.
After each lesson, we welcomed Adviser Kashiwagi from the Osaka City Educational Centre, who kindly offered guidance and feedback on both classes. To keep improving the everyday classroom, all of our teachers will continue to learn and grow. As "Team Hokuryō," we will keep dedicating ourselves to shaping lessons that truly support our students' learning.
