Year 7 Assembly — A Time to Open Up "Thinking"
Today, the Year 7 assembly was held. Rather than taking the usual lecture-style format, this session was designed as a participatory workshop using worksheets. After students settled into their places, a sheet was handed out to each of them. They began by writing only their names, then waited for the next instruction.
The teacher in charge shared a simple set of rules: "There isn't only one answer," and "There are no wrong answers either." Rather than glancing at a neighbour's sheet or worrying about someone who hadn't yet written anything down, students were invited first to face their own thoughts and put them into words. Some sat quietly with pen in hand, turning the question over in their minds; others jotted things down as ideas came to them. Each student approached the questions at their own pace.
Partway through, there was a short moment for sharing with the person sitting next to them. Here, the teacher highlighted an attitude worth cherishing: "receive what the other person says, without dismissing it." "I think this way — oh, you see it that way." Taking in those differences just as they are, and then perhaps adding, "there's also this way of looking at it," is how a conversation grows richer.
This time did not belong only to the students. The Year 7 teachers also sat with the same questions, working through them alongside the children. Adults and young people thinking side by side at the same table — that, too, is a form of learning, and a scene that feels very much like "Team Hokuryō."
Towards the end, the teacher left the students with these words: "The friends you have met in this class and this year group will not be here in three years' time. That is exactly why this connection is something to treasure." It was a brief remark, but it felt like the first step in caring for the person beside you was right there in the room. Just as we tuck academic knowledge into our minds, we hope students will quietly place this way of thinking into a drawer of their own — that was the gentle message left behind.
In the second half of the assembly, the award ceremony for the Indoor Olympics held during the recent Year 7 Nature Experience Programme also took place. The results, won through teamwork with classmates, brought proud expressions to the students standing on stage, and warm applause rose from the floor. Congratulations to all the winners.
"Cherish yourself, cherish the person next to you." The time spent facing a single question, and the time spent making memories with friends — both will become part of the foundation for the school life that lies ahead.
