Hokuryō Junior High School International Club (Chinese) — Opening Ceremony
On Wednesday, 27 May, the opening ceremony for our newly established International Club (Chinese) was held in the multipurpose room. Traditional Chinese dresses, paper cuttings, a lion dance banner, and auspicious phrases such as "萬事順利" and "大吉大利" gave the room a festive atmosphere.
The International Club is an initiative promoted across the city by the Osaka City Board of Education. Guided by the "Osaka City Guidelines for Multicultural Coexistence," it provides children with foreign roots an opportunity, outside of the regular curriculum, to engage with their heritage language and culture — one part of the city's broader effort to support pupils with international backgrounds. This year, our school has opened the club for pupils with Chinese roots.
The ceremony proceeded with an opening address, a message from the head teacher, greetings from the laoshi (teacher), a game, a closing address, and a commemorative photograph. Parts of the programme were chaired by the pupils themselves, conveying their wish to shape the club with their own hands.
In his address, the head teacher said: "You have come to Japan and are working so hard to learn Japanese and Japanese culture. Here, I hope you will learn Chinese language and culture as well, and one day grow into people who can serve as a bridge between Japan and China." Building the ability to live well in Japanese society and treasuring one's own roots are not opposing aims — they are two things to be nurtured together.
Leading the activities was a laoshi dispatched by the Osaka City Board of Education. She came dressed in traditional Taiwanese indigenous attire, and the vibrant clothing and floral headpiece brought a gentle warmth to the room. She was accompanied by a coordinator from the Board of Education, who supported the session throughout.
The game — a Chinese version of "Fruit Basket" — brought the room to life. Pupils moved seats whenever Chinese words signalled them to do so, and laughter filled the air as the distance between classmates quickly shrank. There were many moments when, even without sharing a full common language, expressions and gestures alone were enough to connect.
The International Club meets once a month. "Treasure yourself. Treasure the person beside you." May these words become a thread that ties our pupils together across differences of language and culture.
In the months ahead, the club plans to explore Dragon Boat Festival traditions, Chinese tea, paper cutting, the Mid-Autumn Festival, ink painting, Lunar New Year, and a dumpling-making lesson, among other activities. Beginning with knowing the friends right here beside us, the world of learning will open up little by little.
