Today’s School Lunch
Today’s menu:
・Oyakodon (topping and rice served separately)
・Kōhaku Namasu (red-and-white pickled daikon & carrot)
・Sweet-simmered Black Soybeans
・Milk
Today’s oyakodon was the separate style—ladle the hot topping over the rice right before eating.
Both rice and topping arrived piping hot. Our thanks to the kitchen staff at Nishisenba Elementary, the delivery driver, and our school’s serving staff for their teamwork.
【Did you know?】
・Kōhaku namasu: the white daikon and red carrot represent “red and white,” a celebratory color pairing; the fine strips are likened to decorative mizuhiki cords—hence its auspicious meaning.
・Sweet-simmered black soybeans: in Japanese, mame implies health and diligence, so black beans symbolize well-being and industriousness—a New Year’s staple.
In Class 2-1, students returned from technology class and still managed a smooth, quick serving—soon everyone began lunch together with a cheerful “Itadakimasu!”
