Today, I visited the special exhibition at the Osaka Museum of Natural History, “Curators at Work — Collecting, Researching, Communicating,” which was open through today.
The exhibition clearly explains what curators do—how they collect, study, and share natural history materials—using real specimens and concrete examples. As you move through the displays, you naturally find yourself looking at things with a “researcher’s eye.”
In the “Junior Independent Research & Specimen Gallery” held alongside the exhibition, our students from the Science Club at Osaka Municipal Hokuryo Junior High School also presented their work.
Their project was titled: “Micro-investigation of Oxalis — The Relationship Between Urban Evolution and Leaf Color.”
They collected and observed Oxalis both on our school grounds and at the Sakuranomiya OAP circular plaza. Their findings showed that the leaves are not only green, but can also appear red or mixed green-and-red, and they suggested that these differences may be linked to environmental conditions. The way they documented and communicated the research—carefully and clearly, with photos—was excellent. It was truly inspiring to see a familiar plant turned into a rigorous piece of scientific inquiry, and it made me feel proud.
Since today was the final day, it’s a real shame that the exhibition has come to an end.
Still, what we saw today—and the students’ solid, thoughtful work—will surely become the starting point for their next step in research.
To everyone in the Science Club: outstanding work, and thank you!
