School Assembly: The Imagination to See Both Light and Shadow
On Monday 28 April, a whole-school assembly was held in the gymnasium. Although Golden Week means school days are dotted here and there this week, pupils arrived in good spirits this morning. The sky was overcast, but the weather was mild, and there was a brisk energy in the students' step as they made their way to school.
The headteacher's address centred on the historical significance of 28 April. On this date in 1952, the San Francisco Peace Treaty came into effect and Japan regained its sovereignty. At the same time, however, Okinawa and other regions remained under American administration; Okinawa was not returned to Japan until 1972. The same day and the same event can be seen as a "day of restored sovereignty" by some and a "day of humiliation" by others. The headteacher introduced these facts with care and sensitivity.
From there, the talk moved closer to the pupils' everyday lives. A group of friends enjoying themselves may not realise that the same moment looks entirely different to someone who feels left out. A casual remark, harmless to the person who said it, can stay with the person who heard it for a long time. The core message was clear: we should all use our imagination to consider whether our own "light" might be casting a "shadow" on someone else. As the pupils sat quietly in the gymnasium listening, many appeared deep in thought.
Nearly a month has passed since the start of the new school year, and pupils are settling into their new classes. Precisely because things are becoming more comfortable, the assembly offered a timely reminder to reflect on how we use our words. The next whole-school assembly is scheduled for Monday 11 May, after the Golden Week break, when the theme will be "Thinking about Bullying and the Value of Life." We hope all pupils enjoy a restful holiday and return to school in good health.
