It’s the Small Steps That Stay with Us – Year 9 Assembly: Bibliobattle Awards and a Teacher’s Talk –
Year 9 held a year-group assembly. After lining up and exchanging greetings, the assembly began with the awards for the school Bibliobattle qualifying round.
The pupils who won the top prize and the excellence prizes came to the front to receive their certificates. Sharing the appeal of a favourite book in their own words and winning over an audience is no small challenge, and it was lovely to see that effort recognised in front of the whole year group. The top-prize winner will represent the school at the junior high school division of the 11th Osaka Prefecture Junior and Senior High School Bibliobattle Competition, held on Sunday 29 November at the Osaka Prefectural Government Sakishima Building (Sakishima Cosmo Tower).
Next, one of the Year 9 teachers spoke to the pupils, looking back on the recent Sports Day.
The teacher explained that when meeting up with childhood friends and chatting about school events, the question of which class won hardly ever comes up. What people tend to remember instead are the small moments: talking things through together, or something a friend said at just the right time. The teacher shared this from personal experience.
The talk went on to suggest that in high school entrance interviews and personal statements, and later in university applications and job interviews, what really matters may be less the result itself and more how you thought and acted when things didn’t go to plan. Something as simple as saying a few words to a friend who is feeling down after a loss — that kind of small step is what truly comes across to others.
The same applies to exam preparation. There will be times when scores refuse to rise and it feels like hitting a wall. Having a goal is of course important, the teacher concluded, but how you think and act on the way to that goal matters even more. Perhaps because Sports Day was still fresh in their minds, many pupils seemed to be listening closely and relating the talk to their own experiences.
There is not much time left in junior high school now. We hope every Year 9 pupil will turn the experiences built up through school events into strength, and make the most of each day in their own way. The whole school is cheering on our representative at the prefectural competition!
