Thinking About the Future — Year 9 Assembly
On Friday 1 May, despite the rain that had been falling since early morning, our Year 9 students gathered in the gymnasium for an assembly focused on career and educational pathways.
The teacher in charge of the day's talk shared personal experiences of choosing a path during their own secondary school years — weighing up strengths and weaknesses, things they wanted to try and things they preferred to avoid. An important point was also raised: what you are good at and what you enjoy are not necessarily the same thing.
A particularly memorable part of the talk was the idea that other people can sometimes see our strengths and aptitudes more clearly than we can ourselves. The teacher reflected on how a casual remark from a family member stayed with them over the years and ultimately helped shape the career they have today.
Choosing a path is something each student must think through and work towards on their own. At the same time, conversations with family, teachers and friends may hold clues to possibilities we have not yet noticed in ourselves. As Year 9 students begin to spend more time considering their futures, we hope today's talk will encourage them to reflect on their strengths, their interests, and the qualities that others see in them.
