May Return to School and the "Cup of the Heart" ― Year 8 Year Group Assembly
After a five-day holiday, students returned to school after a brief break. The May breeze was refreshingly pleasant, yet the morning sun shone brightly, hinting at the approach of summer. Students walked through the school gates with a touch of post-holiday reluctance on their faces, but with energy in their steps as they made their way to their classrooms.
On this day, Year 8 held its regular year group assembly. The teacher in charge spoke to the students about a topic that invited them to reflect on their inner selves and daily lives ― the idea of the "Cup of the Heart."
Within each person's heart, there is a cup, and the size of that cup differs from one person to another. The events of each day fill this cup, drop by drop, like water. As students enter Year 8, they welcome new juniors, take on more school events, face examinations, and gradually become central figures in their clubs as they take over from older students. Although each individual experience may seem small, when they accumulate, the cup of the heart can begin to overflow. A word or moment that would normally go unnoticed can become the final drop that leads to feelings of stress or sadness.
The teacher first spoke about the importance of noticing one's own emotional state. Asking oneself, "Am I still okay?" or "Is my cup getting close to full?" ― being aware of the water level in one's own cup of the heart is essential. Equally important is having one's own ways to ease the pressure: talking to someone, getting enough sleep, or spending time on things one enjoys.
The teacher also encouraged students to pay attention to the cups of those around them. When a friend appears to be struggling, a kind word or quiet support can help reduce the water in their cup. On the other hand, a careless word or action can add drops to someone else's cup. For this reason, students were asked to be mindful of using language that does not pour water into others' cups, and to offer small acts of kindness that bring comfort to those around them.
Teachers, too, have their own cups of the heart. The teachers explained that when they correct students, it is not out of anger, but because there is something important they wish to convey. The Year 8 teachers shared their wish to continue standing alongside each and every student. When students feel troubled or overwhelmed, they should not carry it alone, but feel free to talk to a teacher at any time.
The period after a long holiday can be a time when both body and mind feel a little tired. We hope to cherish each other's cups of the heart and work together to create a school life where everyone feels safe and at ease. We kindly ask families to keep a watchful eye on their children at home as well.
