Five Great Reads for a Clear Morning ― Year 9 Assembly
Although rain had been forecast for the morning, the skies cleared beautifully by the time students arrived at school. Under bright sunshine, our Year 9 students made their way through the school gates with energy and good cheer.
Today, we held a Year 9 assembly, featuring a presentation from our school librarian, who introduced five recommended books. She opened with a warm invitation: "I hope you'll make use of the library during morning reading time, or on days when the weather keeps you indoors."
(Hoshi Shin'ichi Short Short Selection / Shinichi Hoshi Flash Fiction Selection)
"This is exactly the book I'd recommend to anyone who finds reading difficult." The librarian began with a collection of flash fiction by Shinichi Hoshi. Each story is just two or three pages long, written in clear, accessible prose, and finished with a clever twist. The library holds several volumes in this series — perfect for students who want to read something short and savour an unexpected ending.
(Nanji, Hoshi no Gotoku / Like Stars Above)
The librarian's personal favourite, this novel won the Booksellers' Award. It captures the unspoken feelings everyone experiences at some point — about family, about choosing one's path, about the shifting distances between friends. A film adaptation is reportedly scheduled for autumn. As you read, you find yourself drawn close to the characters, and gently led to reflect on how you might shape your own future.
📗 Book 3 ― Supervised by Tadaaki Imaizumi, (Zannen na Ikimono Jiten / Encyclopaedia of Unfortunate Creatures)
A long-running bestseller often spotted in bookshops. Each page pairs an illustration with a fun fact, making it easy to dip in and out. From sea cucumbers that expel their internal organs when threatened, to many other surprising and amusing animal behaviours, the book is packed with curiosities. With several volumes in the series, it's an enjoyable read even for students who feel less confident in science.
(Aisareten da to Jikaku Shina / Realise You Are Loved)
The next two recommendations come from a student who has served as a library committee member for three years and currently leads the committee as chairperson. This eye-catching novel is technically a romance, yet it features deities and even physical battles — an unconventional blend that keeps readers turning pages. Rather than relying on sweet dialogue, it draws you in with light, witty exchanges. With "love that endures across reincarnations" as its theme, it's a story full of delightful contrasts.
(Monogatari no Tane / Seeds of Stories)
Finally, a uniquely conceived short-story collection in which every tale was inspired by small posts and moments shared on social media. Cats, flowers, the night sky — familiar, everyday subjects are woven into gentle stories. Like Hoshi's collection, the short format makes it easy to read, leaving the reader with a warm and comforting feeling.
To close the assembly, the librarian offered a final thought: "I get the impression that not many Year 9 students visit the library. Of course, playing volleyball in the courtyard is wonderful too, but on rainy days, I'd love for you to step into the library and open a book."
The rainy season is just around the corner. Days when outdoor play isn't possible may be the perfect chance to discover a new book in the library. We hope that through reading, each Year 9 student's world will continue to grow ever wider.
