那就是Empathy(同理心)。

The Best Performance, Made Possible by Friendship
~ Reflecting on a School Festival Filled with Empathy ~
On Friday, October 16, our school festival came to a close with a wonderful performance by the school concert band.
As soon as the music began, the gymnasium filled with enthusiastic cheers and applause. Students responded excitedly to the music, while the performers on stage played with tremendous energy, inspired by the encouragement of their audience. Watching this scene reminded me of something important.
The students of Hokuryo Junior High School certainly love a good festival. Perhaps that is only natural, considering that our school is located in the heart of the area famous for the Tenjin Festival, one of Japan's three great festivals.
But what impressed me was that their enthusiasm was accompanied by consideration for others. They listened quietly when the music called for their attention and celebrated wholeheartedly when it was time to cheer. I was deeply impressed by their ability to recognize the appropriate moment for each.
Over the past two years, our concert band has performed at many different venues. They played before the fireworks at the Tenjin Festival and also had the opportunity to perform at Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai.
Their performances have taken them to The Symphony Hall, Kinrankai High School, local community centers, and the neighborhood festival known as "Sukkyanen Takigawa."
Wherever they performed, we received generous compliments from audience members, often hearing comments such as, "What a wonderful performance by such a large ensemble!" As principal, I have always felt immensely proud of them.
And yet, I believe today's performance was the finest I have heard from them in these past two years.
Why? Because today's audience was made up of their own friends and fellow students at Hokuryo Junior High School.
The students on stage were performing with all their hearts, while the friends they see every day at school cheered them on with genuine enthusiasm. In turn, the performers responded to that encouragement by giving their very best.
Together, the performers and the audience created something that neither could have achieved alone.
During school assemblies, I have often spoken to our students about the importance of empathy.
When our band performs outside school, audience members frequently tell us, "Amazing!" "So cool!" or "That was moving!" Their hearts are touched by the music, and they share in the excitement and emotion of the performance. This kind of emotional connection is close to what we call sympathy. It is something truly valuable, and we are deeply grateful for it.
However, today's performance offered something different and equally meaningful.
That something was empathy.
Empathy means putting ourselves in someone else's position and imagining how they might be feeling.
"My friend up on that stage must be nervous."
"I wonder how many hours of practice it took to prepare for today."
"If I were the one performing, how happy would I feel to have all my friends cheering for me like this?"
Because these students share their everyday school lives, they can imagine one another's feelings in ways that are especially meaningful.
And because they understand those feelings, they know when to cheer enthusiastically and when to listen with quiet respect.
It is not simply about enjoying the performance ourselves. It is also about helping the people on stage enjoy their moment to the fullest.
That is the kind of empathy that filled our gymnasium today.
This is why I believe today's performance was the best of the past two years. It was not simply a wonderful performance by our concert band. It was an unforgettable experience created together by the performers and every Hokuryo student in the audience.
For our third-year band members, today's performance marked an important milestone, although they still have one more performance at our upcoming Sports Day.
To all the members of the concert band, thank you for sharing your wonderful music with us, both inside and outside school. And to the entire student body, thank you for making today's performance so special.
I also took time today to appreciate the student artwork and projects on display.
Although I cannot introduce every piece individually, each one reflected the effort, creativity, and thoughtfulness that students have developed through their lessons and daily activities.
Some works were carefully crafted, others revealed wonderfully original ideas, and still others demonstrated deep reflection and persistence. Each piece offered a glimpse into its creator's individuality, sensitivity, and journey of learning.
In fact, my own daughter, who is in her third year of junior high school, will be having her school festival next week. Unfortunately, because of my responsibilities at school, I will not be able to attend.
As I looked at our students' work today, I found myself thinking, "I imagine my daughter is working just as hard on her own projects."
Behind every finished piece of work is a student who has devoted time, care, and effort to creating it.
Appreciating not only the finished result but also imagining the feelings and hard work behind it is, I believe, another expression of empathy.
Looking back on these two days, from yesterday's choral competition to today's school festival, I have been deeply moved by our students.
During the choral competition, every class worked together to blend individual voices into a single musical expression.
Of course, a competition involves rankings. But that does not mean only the prize-winning classes deserve recognition. Every class has its own story, its own challenges, and its own journey of effort and growth.
Those who sing, those who perform music, those who create works of art, and those who listen, appreciate, and offer encouragement all play an essential role.
The forms of expression may differ, but a school festival becomes truly meaningful only when there are people willing to share something of themselves and others ready to receive it with open hearts.
Throughout these two days, I witnessed students recognizing one another's efforts and offering sincere encouragement in every corner of our school.
Next comes our Sports Day.
I am confident that the unity, compassion, and consideration for others demonstrated over these two days will carry forward into our next event.
My hope is to make Hokuryo Junior High School a place that people will one day describe as the best school in Osaka, or even in all of Japan.
But greatness is not measured by the number of trophies or awards a school receives.
It is found in respecting our differences, celebrating one another's achievements, and reaching out to those who need support.
It is found in creating a school where every student can genuinely say:
"I want to come back to school tomorrow."
Watching our students over these two days, I truly felt that we had taken another meaningful step toward becoming that kind of school.
Thank you for your beautiful singing, your wonderful performances, your creative work, and, above all, the kindness and care you show toward one another.
I am sincerely proud to be the principal of Hokuryo Junior High School.
