Passing On the Torch: Words from Our Outgoing and Incoming Student Council Presidents ~ Whole-School Assembly and Appointment Ceremony ~
On Tuesday 20 October, we held a whole-school assembly.
The assembly began with the presentation of certificates to pupils who won prizes in the 22nd “Osakana” (Fish) Art Competition, and to those whose work was selected for the 35th Osaka City Junior High Schools’ Comprehensive Culture Festival (Art Exhibition section).
This was followed by the appointment ceremony for the second-term Student Council officers and the committee members from each class. To close the ceremony, the outgoing and incoming Student Council presidents each gave a speech.
Looking back on a year and a half in the role, the outgoing president spoke honestly not only about the enjoyable moments, but also about times when things didn’t go as planned, when he struggled and lost confidence. He explained that he was able to keep going thanks to the support of his friends, the teachers and the older pupils, and thanked them all. He then offered words of encouragement to the new officers: “Especially when things aren’t going well, rely on the people around you. Don’t carry everything alone, and do things in your own way.”
The new president admitted that speaking in front of others and leading people do not come naturally to him, but said he is determined to work hard on what he can do, one step at a time. He also shared his hopes for the Student Council: “I want to value everyone’s voices, talk things through together, and make things happen little by little.”
The feelings for the Student Council have now been passed on from one generation of pupils to the next. To all our new officers and committee members: we hope you will make the most of your roles and help build an even better Hokuryō Junior High School.
Please note that the Principal’s talk, originally planned for this assembly, has been postponed until next week due to time constraints.
