Carrying the Spirit of Sports Day into Everyday School Life — Year 8 Assembly
Year 8 held a year-group assembly to look back on our recent Sports Day.
The teacher leading the assembly explained that giving your all isn’t only about running fast or cheering loudly. It also means putting your heart into whatever role you have, whether that’s competing, supporting from the sidelines, or helping out as a member of staff for the day. The teacher also mentioned the pupils who cheered on their classmates from right alongside them, and encouraged everyone to bring that same commitment, to themselves and to one another, into their daily school life.
The talk then turned to the power of words. Even something meant as a joke can hurt someone’s feelings. Pupils were encouraged to pause and think before speaking: how might the other person take it, and how would they feel if it were said to them?
In the second half, the student committees shared their messages. The Student Life Committee asked everyone to make a point of giving a cheerful, energetic greeting so that we can all start the morning on a positive note. The Information Committee reminded pupils that even online, there is a real person on the other side of the screen, and asked everyone to read their message again before sending it to make sure it won’t hurt anyone.
Giving your best for yourself and for your friends, and choosing your words with others’ feelings in mind — both connect closely with a value our school holds dear: “Value yourself, value the person beside you.” We look forward to seeing the bond that Year 8 built at Sports Day grow even stronger through everyday greetings and kind words.
