Today's School Lunch (Chinese-Style Sticky Rice with Kintoki Beans)
Today's school lunch featured Chinese-style sticky rice with kintoki beans.
Today's Menu
・Chinese-style sticky rice with kintoki beans
・Simmered round tempura and vegetables
・Mixed fruit cocktail
・Raisin bread
・Milk
The sticky rice was carefully soaked in warm water before being steamed with a seasoning blend of sesame oil, soy sauce, and chicken broth.
The tender, chewy texture of the rice paired beautifully with the gentle sweetness of kintoki beans and the savory aroma of roast pork and shimeji mushrooms — a dish that felt inviting from the very first whiff.
The simmered round tempura and vegetables began with ginger gently sautéed for fragrance, followed by chicken and vegetables cooked carefully in order, and finished with a smooth, comforting starch glaze.
The bright colors of cabbage, carrots, and green beans stood out, while the round tempura soaked up the rich broth.
"Okowa is kind of like red-bean rice, but a little different, isn't it?" one student observed.
Sekihan uses azuki or sasage beans, while today's okowa uses kintoki beans — the variety of beans and seasoning differs, and noticing such things is one of the small pleasures of school lunch.
Although the okowa and raisin bread may look like overlapping carbohydrates, the protein from the round tempura, the vitamins from the vegetables and fruit, and the calcium from the milk are all thoughtfully balanced.
We also had a chance to observe how Class 1-2 served their lunch.
Working together, calling out to one another, and moving briskly through their tasks — the scene left a lasting impression.
Thank you for another delicious lunch today.
To our kitchen staff and serving assistants — thank you, as always, for everything.
