2nd-Year Grade Assembly and Announcements
Today again brought us a truly mid-winter chill,
and even the TV news is reporting this as “the strongest and longest cold wave of the season.”
Please be sure to bundle up with coats, scarves, and gloves on your way to and from school,
and take care not to catch a cold.
This morning, the 2nd-year students held a grade assembly.
The grade teacher gave a talk based on his own experiences working part-time jobs as a student.
He began with a light-hearted quiz: “Which part-time jobs do you think I’ve done?”
He showed options from 1 to 5, and then revealed the answer: “Actually, all of them.”
The students were surprised, and the hall filled with laughter and interest.
The teacher explained that with his very first part-time job,
he actually “wanted to quit almost immediately,”
yet in the end he stayed there for four years.
He spoke honestly about the kinds of difficulties anyone might face:
not getting used to the work, struggling to remember tasks,
and feeling worn down by human relationships.
Even so, he said that meeting a senior colleague at staff meetings
who genuinely cared about him became a major source of support.
Later, when he himself became a part-time leader,
he made a conscious effort to ensure that new staff could work with peace of mind,
placing importance on “psychological safety” so that newcomers would not feel anxious or isolated.
At the same time, he was sometimes told that he was “not really suited for customer service.”
Still, he felt that “there are things you can only come to see by staying with something over time.”
On the other hand, he stressed that
if emotional strain begins to affect your physical health,
then it is absolutely okay to decide to quit and step away.
In closing, the teacher left students with this message:
“As long as it isn’t harming your health, trying to keep going for a while is important.”
It was a talk that encouraged students to think deeply about
how to balance “persevering” with “protecting one’s own well-being.”
【Comment】
The teacher’s part-time job story is not only about life in the future as working adults;
it also connects directly to students’ current school life, club activities, and committee work.
When things feel difficult, the options are not limited to simply “quit right away” or “just endure it.”
The presence of people who support you, and the way you build a sense of belonging,
can completely change how you view a situation.
The way the teacher focused on creating “psychological safety” for newcomers
is exactly the kind of mindset that also helps build positive classes and grades.
I hope this assembly will prompt 2nd-year students to realize that
they are not only on the side of “being supported,”
but can also be on the side of “supporting someone else.”
