The Day Before Graduation ── A Final Morning for Third-Years and a Year Assembly Where Second-Years Reflected on What "Normal" Means
Today is the day before the graduation ceremony. This morning, third-year students walked through the school gates alongside first- and second-years for the very last time. The graduation rehearsal is scheduled for the second and third periods, and we hope everyone will take the opportunity to prepare thoroughly for tomorrow's ceremony.
Out on the school grounds, the second-year students gathered for their year assembly. With March 11th upon us once again, it was a time to look back on the Great East Japan Earthquake and reflect together on what "normal" really means.
This week's speaker shared his own experience as a university student when the massive earthquake and tsunami struck on March 11, 2011. Unlike today, smartphones were not yet widespread, and the true scale of the disaster was not immediately apparent. It was only after returning home and watching the tsunami footage broadcast repeatedly on television that he first felt the full weight of what had happened.
The teacher then introduced a news story about a beef bowl relief effort in the disaster-affected area. An elderly person being interviewed had said, "This is the first time in my life I've ever eaten a beef bowl" and "I had no idea something could taste this good." Those words, the teacher shared, have stayed with him ever since.
We tend to assume that what feels ordinary to us must be ordinary for everyone. Through this story, however, the teacher conveyed a heartfelt message to the students: "What is 'normal' for you may not be 'normal' for someone else." Differences in culture, upbringing, and perspective mean that many versions of "normal" coexist within any community. Rather than judging others by our own standards, we can choose to accept what is normal for them and refrain from imposing our own sense of normal on others. The students listened quietly, each seemingly deep in thought.
With roughly one year remaining in their time as second-years, we hope that today's message will inspire the 78th class to respect one another and build an even warmer year group and school community in the days ahead. Tomorrow is graduation day, and we look forward to the whole school coming together to give our third-years a wonderful send-off. We are grateful to parents and community members for your continued warm support.
