School Assembly (Awards) and a Morning Student Council Activity
This morning, the Student Council executive members were once again at the school entrance collecting unused postcards.
They greeted students as they arrived and carried out the work steadily.
This kind of consistent effort, day by day, helps create a warm and welcoming atmosphere at school.
Tuesday is our school-wide assembly day.
Today, because we had an awards presentation, the assembly was held in the gymnasium.
We would like to congratulate all students who received awards and recognize the effort behind their achievements.
The principal began with a seasonal note.
January 20 marked “Daikan” (the coldest period in the traditional calendar), and February 4 will be “Risshun,” the beginning of spring on the calendar.
Even so, the cold weather will likely continue for a while.
That is why it is important to take care of the basics—enough sleep, breakfast, and handwashing.
In particular, Grade 9 students have many schedule demands related to their future pathways, so they were encouraged to avoid overdoing it and to manage their health carefully.
The principal then shared a personal episode from 30 years ago while traveling abroad with his mother.
At breakfast in an unfamiliar place, a local man sitting nearby noticed they were unsure and kindly spoke to them in Japanese.
Without being asked, he even helped them purchase a bus ticket to their next destination.
That simple act of kindness brought real relief and made it possible to continue the trip with peace of mind.
The principal noted that, more than tourist spots or food, what often remains most strongly is the memory that “people were kind.”
From there, the message connected back to daily life at Hokuryo Junior High School.
We also have many classmates who have come from other countries.
They may struggle with language, school rules, or cultural differences.
How we respond in those moments can determine whether they feel this school is a safe and reassuring place.
What we can do is not difficult: if someone seems to be struggling, speak to them; if something is unclear, go together and ask a teacher.
At the same time, we must not tease, laugh at, or turn someone into a topic, and we must not imitate the way they speak or act.
Students were encouraged to think: if you were in another country and treated that way, how would you feel?
The principal concluded with a reflection on what it means to be “strong.”
Strength is not about weapons or being loud.
True strength is shown in how kindly we treat others and how readily we reach out to those who are struggling.
The same applies to our school: a strong school is not one that wins arguments, but one that does not abandon anyone and allows everyone to feel safe.
Because cold seasons can make it harder to keep emotional space, the principal asked everyone to be especially kind to the people right in front of them.
In addition, the student guidance teacher spoke about school rules.
To ensure a safe and comfortable school life for everyone, we encourage all students to review the rules and reflect on daily behavior as we continue building a positive school environment together.
