Year 8 Assembly: Building a Class Together / Messages from the Student Committees
Today, Year 8 held a year-group assembly. The teacher leading it shared the story Muramatsuri no Taruzake (村祭りのたる酒, "The Sake Barrel at the Village Festival") to talk about what it means to be part of a group, and the responsibility that comes with it. In the story, the villagers agree that everyone will bring some sake to fill a barrel for the festival. But each of them thinks, "Surely no one will notice if just I bring water" — and in the end, the barrel holds nothing but water.
A good class is not something that is simply there from the start. It is built together, by each person thinking "I'm part of this class too" and "I want to do my bit for it." Looking ahead to next week's choral competition, pupils were reminded not to leave things to others, to think about what they themselves can contribute to rehearsals, and to support one another. Whether each person's cup poured into the barrel is the real thing — that holds true for a class, and for a choir.
The student committees then made their own appeals: to use information with copyright in mind, to look after our eyes by taking breaks and looking into the distance, and to keep to the school rules every day, not just on uniform-and-conduct check days. The Committee Chairs' Council also performed a short skit encouraging everyone to be in their seats when the bell rings. Checking the clock, acting on our own initiative, and giving friends a gentle reminder too — through small everyday steps like these, we agreed to keep developing our ability to run things ourselves.
Taking care of your own cup is also a way of taking care of the person beside you. We're already looking forward to hearing what Year 8 will bring to the stage at next week's choral competition.
