Fire Evacuation Drill Completed — Full Evacuation in 4 Minutes 44 Seconds
On Monday, April 13, Hokuryō Junior High School conducted its first fire evacuation drill of the academic year during the sixth period. Firefighters from the Yoriki Branch of the Osaka City Kita Fire Station joined us on campus to provide professional guidance.
When the alarm sounded, students moved swiftly from the school building to the grounds. The entire school completed the evacuation in 4 minutes and 44 seconds, an improvement of 8 seconds over last year.
In his remarks, the principal commended the students for their serious attitude throughout the drill, adding: "Drills prepare us to act decisively in a real emergency. I hope each of you will think about how to apply what you practiced today."
The firefighters then shared valuable knowledge drawn from real-life experience. A fire extinguisher is effective only when the flames remain below a person's height. Its spray reaches about 3 to 5 meters and lasts roughly 15 seconds. If a fire exceeds that scale, immediate evacuation is essential. The words "Even trained professionals can lose their lives in a fire" clearly resonated with the students.
After the briefing, student representatives took part in hands-on fire extinguisher training under the firefighters' supervision. They practiced the full sequence — pulling the pin, aiming the hose, and discharging — many of them handling an extinguisher for the very first time. Their focused expressions reflected how seriously they took the exercise.
We encourage our students to share what they learned today with their families at home. Discussing "what to do in an emergency" together is one of the most effective ways to prepare for the unexpected. Thank you, as always, for your understanding and support of our school's safety education efforts.
