Whole-School Assembly: Reflections on the Day of Mourning (23 June)
On the morning of Monday 23 June, the skies were overcast, but the students arrived bright and full of energy as ever. This morning we held a whole-school assembly in the gymnasium.
The assembly opened with a word about the end-of-term examinations, which have begun to be returned. What matters is not only the marks, but how much effort each student has put in. A question answered incorrectly is simply a weak point brought to light, so the students were encouraged to view it positively and to revise thoroughly over the summer holidays.
The assembly then turned to the fact that today, 23 June, is Okinawa's "Day of Mourning" (慰霊の日 / Irei no Hi). Holding up the two characters "慰霊" brushed large in ink, the principal spoke about their meaning, the history of the Battle of Okinawa, and the burdens that Okinawa continues to carry to this day. The students listened in quiet attention.
To close, the talk returned to the words our school holds dear: "Value yourself, and value the person beside you." The assembly ended with an invitation to extend that idea of "the person beside you" a little further afield — to think of Okinawa, and of those close at hand who may be quietly carrying something of their own.
