Wind Ensemble Performs at the "Sukkyanen Takigawa" Summer Festival
On Friday 7 and Saturday 8 August, the Takigawa district held its summer festival and Bon dance event, "Sukkyanen Takigawa". On the opening day, Friday the 7th, our school's Wind Ensemble was given the opportunity to perform.
Colourful paper lanterns lined the grounds, and a large crowd gathered around the central platform. As the evening light began to fade, the students took up their instruments and played standing throughout the performance. Playing while standing is quite different from playing seated, and holding one's posture while keeping the ensemble together is no easy task. Thanks to the practice they had put in for this day, however, a steady, well-balanced sound carried from the first piece right through to the last.
The performance ran for around twenty minutes, including an encore. At the end of each piece, warm applause came from the local residents. The pupils watched the conductor closely, their concentration plain to see, and their wish to send the music out to everyone listening came across clearly.
Among the audience were many former pupils as well as classmates from school. Meeting familiar faces outside the school gates is not something that happens often. For the members finishing their performance, seeing people they knew among those applauding will surely have meant a great deal.
Opportunities such as this come to us only because of the local community, which supports and looks out for our school day by day. We are sincerely grateful to have had our pupils welcomed into one part of this important local occasion. Thank you very much.
The watchword of Team Hokuryō is "Value yourself, and value the person beside you." We hope the experience of bringing music to the community will carry over into everything the students do from here. We would be grateful for your continued warm support of their efforts.
