CO₂ Monitors Installed in Every Classroom ― Making Ventilation Visible Ahead of the Choral Contest
With the choral contest approaching, rehearsals in each class are gradually moving into full swing. Today, to support infection prevention and to make it easier to see how well our classrooms are being ventilated, we installed CO₂ monitors in every general classroom.
A CO₂ monitor does not detect infection itself. By measuring the carbon dioxide concentration in a room, it gives us one useful indication of whether the air is being refreshed often enough. Each monitor displays the reading in large figures, and the ventilation status is also shown by colour, so it can be understood at a glance.
The monitors caught the pupils' attention straight away. Some deliberately breathed out close to the sensor — and were genuinely impressed to find that a single breath was enough to move the numbers. Seeing the figures shift seemed to bring home just how much their own breathing changes the air around them.
Choral rehearsals in particular involve a great many pupils singing at once. We will therefore make full use of windows, doors and extractor fans, air the rooms between pieces, and keep an eye on the monitor readings as rehearsals go on.
The choral contest is an important occasion at our school — one where a class builds something together. That is precisely why we want to value not only singing wholeheartedly, but also everyone arriving at the day in good health.
Before long, singing will be heard from every corner of the school. We would be grateful if families could keep up morning health checks at home and stay alert to any changes in their child's condition.
We will continue to prepare the environment so that our pupils can take part in the contest safely, comfortably and with everything they have. We hope you will look forward to hearing Team Hokuryō sing.
