Back in Her Old Classroom: Student Teacher Ms Shimowada's Demonstration Lesson (Year 7 Class 5, Music)
In period 4 today, Ms Shimowada, who is currently on teaching practice with us, gave a music demonstration lesson to Year 7 Class 5. Ms Shimowada is herself a former pupil of our school. The unit was titled "Listening to Erlkönig with a Focus on Vocal Tone Colour". She taught her younger schoolmates in the very music room where she once studied.
The piece was Erlkönig (The Erl-King), the song Schubert composed at the age of 18. On a stormy night, a father gallops through the dark holding his feverish son, while the Erl-King tries to lure the boy away with sweet words. A single singer performs all four roles: the narrator, the father, the child and the Erl-King. Pupils first followed the story through a series of illustrated scenes. They then recalled how the triplets in the opening piano part represent the sound of the horse's hooves, and gradually stepped into the world of the music.
The heart of the lesson was listening for how each character's feelings are expressed through vocal tone colour: pitch, dynamics and atmosphere. Pupils listened carefully and noted their ideas on their worksheets. When it came time to share, hands went up eagerly all around the room. One by one, their words filled the whiteboard. The father was "low", "strong" and "calm". The child went "high → even higher!" with "anxiety rising". The Erl-King moved from "soft and quiet" to "powerful".
Many pupils noticed how the Erl-King's voice, gentle and sweet at first, turns frightening by the end. The lesson closed with a question to think about: was the Erl-King really there, or was he a vision brought on by the boy's high fever? It was a chance for everyone to sense how much drama one voice and a piano can create.
The large illustrations and colour-coded board displays in the photos show just how carefully this lesson was prepared. Well done, Ms Shimowada, on your demonstration lesson. We hope the experience you have gained back at your old school will carry you forward on the path ahead. And thank you, Year 7 Class 5, for helping to make the lesson such a success.
