2nd Grade Assembly Report (Building Relationships with “Soft” Words)
Morning Scene
It was the coldest morning of the season.
The street in front of the main gate, where the wind funnels between buildings, felt especially chilly.
Even so, students arrived in good spirits.
2nd Grade Assembly
Today we held the 2nd grade assembly.
The grade teacher spoke about everyday relationships and word choice.
Teacher’s Story
The teacher has two children in preschool.
At a recent parent–teacher conference, the teacher was told, “They’re doing very well.”
One thing that stood out was how the children often read a certain picture book and then interacted well with friends based on it.
The book is titled “Fuwa-Fuwa Kotoba to Chiku-Chiku Kotoba” (“Soft Words and Prickly Words”).
About the Book (Key Points)
The book contrasts soft words that warm others = fuwa-fuwa kotoba with prickly words that hurt others = chiku-chiku kotoba.
Phrases like “Let’s do it together” or “Thanks for teaching me” are soft.
Words like “Move,” “You’re annoying,” or “Slow” are prickly.
Scene by scene, it invites readers to consider which words help everyone feel comfortable.
The teacher felt happy and impressed that even 5-year-olds think carefully about the words they choose.
Message for 2nd Graders
Lately, there have been moments among some 2nd graders when you might think, “We don’t need to say it that way.”
Even when the content is the same, please think a bit more about how you say it.
Starting today, let’s practice using soft words on purpose.
With word choices that set a good example for younger students, let’s lift the atmosphere of the whole grade.
