School Assembly: Reflecting on "Online Rumors" and Human Rights (April 21)
The morning began with a sudden downpour, but by the time students arrived at school the rain had cleared, giving way to a refreshing breeze. At the school entrance, members of the Student Council and the School Life Committee greeted their fellow students with cheerful "Good mornings," wearing bright yellow sashes.
Every Tuesday is school assembly day. All students gathered in the gymnasium, where the principal delivered the opening address. He first spoke about the importance of making every classroom a place where each person can feel "it's okay to be here" — a space of psychological safety — now that two weeks have passed since the start of the new school year. He then addressed the spread of baseless rumors on social media following a recent incident in Kyoto Prefecture, including false claims about the suspect's nationality. The principal pointed out that the impulse to direct anger at a particular group whenever a serious crime occurs is structurally no different from the rumors that circulated during the Great Kanto Earthquake over a century ago. Drawing on the words of Mr. Yukinori Tamaki, who spoke at last year's PTA human rights lecture — "If you keep adding conditions, everyone becomes a minority" — the principal told students: "Don't judge people by their appearance or background. See each person in front of you as an individual. That is what it truly means to 'value the person beside you.'"
Following the principal's address, the chairperson of the School Life Committee took the stage to review school rules with the entire student body. Seeing students take ownership of communicating their school's expectations was reassuring, and it reflected the spirit of independence that Hokuryō Junior High School cherishes.
