A Day to Reflect on Bullying and the Preciousness of Life (Second Session) — From the Principal's Address
On Monday, 11 May, a school-wide assembly was held in the gymnasium, featuring a principal's address marking the city-wide "Day to Reflect on Bullying and the Preciousness of Life." While this initiative is observed by all schools across Osaka City, Hokuryō Junior High School has chosen to set aside three such occasions over the course of the year, and today marked the second.
The assembly opened with the principal holding up a large sheet of paper on which a passage from the Chinese classic Lunyu (The Analects) had been written in bold brushstrokes: "己所不欲、勿施於人" (Ki no hossezaru tokoro, hito ni hodokosu koto nakare / "Do not do unto others what you would not wish done unto yourself"). A simple yet weighty teaching, carried down across two and a half thousand years.
From there, the principal posed a further question: if it is wrong to do to others what you would not want done to yourself, does that mean it is acceptable to do to others things that would not bother you personally? The same words, the same actions, can be felt entirely differently by different people. "It's just teasing." "We were only messing around." "Look, they're laughing too." Yet behind that laughter, someone may be going home in tears. Whether or not something hurts is decided not by the person doing it, but by the person on the receiving end.
This applies not only inside the classroom but in equal measure to interactions on social media. To think not by one's own measure, but by the measure of the other — perhaps this is what that ancient teaching was truly trying to convey. The message settled quietly over the students in the hall.
The principal then returned to a message that has been shared with the students many times before: cherish yourself, and cherish those beside you. "Those beside you" does not refer only to the friend in the next seat. It means every classmate, every member of the same year group, and every person encountered here at Hokuryō Junior High School.
Another message was conveyed with particular emphasis: it is alright to say "help me." Those words are not a sign of weakness, but of strength. A homeroom teacher, the school nurse, the school counsellor, the principal himself — anyone will do, anywhere will do. If a student raises their voice, the staff will be there to receive them. Even when a situation cannot be resolved immediately, no student will ever be left to face it alone.
Each life is one of a kind, and once lost, cannot be returned. For that very reason, students were asked to cherish their own lives and the lives of those around them. This, in turn, is what brings us closer to "a school students want to come back to tomorrow." The students listened in quiet attention from beginning to end. The third session of this initiative is scheduled for July.
