Year 8 Year Group Assembly: Reflecting on the Outdoor Learning Experience
The morning began under cloudy skies with a strong wind, but the students arrived at school in good spirits. Today, we held the Year 8 year group assembly, focusing on reflections from the outdoor learning experience, along with announcements from the committee chairs' council and the student council, and recognition of achievements from the activities.
The session opened with remarks from the lead teacher about the outdoor learning experience. Weather conditions had forced a number of changes to the planned activities, and some students were no doubt disappointed that things they had been looking forward to could not go ahead. Even so, the students listened carefully to their teachers' instructions and behaved calmly throughout. It is precisely when plans change that the strength of a group is revealed, and the ability of Year 8 to adapt flexibly marked a real step forward in their growth.
Their awareness of time was also notable. Before assembly times were due, students could be heard reminding one another, "We should probably get going." Those with assigned roles carried out their responsibilities and reported back as required. This habit of looking out for one another and moving together is a quality that will serve them well throughout their school life.
At the same time, we reflected on areas for further growth. Asking when something is unclear is important, but so too is first checking the handbook or schedule for oneself. When teachers, facility staff, or fellow students are speaking at the front, the first step is to listen. The talks given by facility staff in particular contain important safety information. We hope to nurture a group of students who can think about how they ought to act, and how their actions are perceived by those around them.
Next, the committee chairs' council spoke about making lunchtime preparation run more smoothly. To ease congestion at the handwashing area, those on serving and carrying duty wash their hands first while the cleaning team waits in the classroom, with the cleaning team washing their hands afterwards. Classes with second-period lessons in other rooms were also reminded to set off promptly.
The student council then explained the rules for using cooling wipes. They may be used during the break following a PE lesson, either in the changing area or in the classroom. We hope every student will keep to these rules so that everyone can enjoy a comfortable school life together. The council also mentioned that opinions and questions can be placed in the suggestion box outside Class 2.
Finally, awards were presented for the activities held during the outdoor learning experience. The winning and runner-up classes were announced to warm applause from the floor. The certificates were written with a touch of humour, celebrating the teamwork and wholehearted effort the students had shown. Smiles spread across the room as the students looked back on their memories from the trip once more.
A school event does not end on the day itself. By looking back together and acknowledging one another's efforts in this way, the experience deepens into genuine learning.
