Year 2 Preparing for the Nature Experience Program — Cultivating "Kōdō-ryoku" (Thoughtful Action)
The morning began with strong sunshine, warm enough to make short sleeves feel just right — almost a foretaste of early summer. Please note that today and tomorrow are the sales days for class photographs. A reception desk has been set up near the entrance, where students were seen quietly lining up with their envelopes in hand. We appreciate your kind cooperation.
Year 2 students are preparing for one of the major events of the year — the Nature Experience Program, scheduled for next week. Today, a year-level assembly was held under the theme "Cultivating Kōdō-ryoku." Kōdō-ryoku, a coined term, refers not merely to the ability to act immediately on impulse, but rather the ability to observe a situation carefully, consider what action is most appropriate, and choose accordingly.
During the assembly, students were presented with four key points to consider before taking action.
First, think about right and wrong. "Is this something I should be doing?" — this is the first question to ask oneself. Judging the correctness of an action against school rules, social norms, and the manners of the moment is an essential skill.
Second, think about timing. Even a good deed requires thought about whether "now" is the right moment. Observing the surrounding situation and choosing an appropriate time is indispensable when acting as part of a group.
Third, think about priorities. Rather than doing what one wants to do, do first what needs to be done. Looking at the program booklet, thinking ahead about what comes next, and acting with foresight is essential.
Fourth, think about the other person's feelings. Imagining how one's words and actions might be received by others is deeply important. Even when one believes "I didn't mean to cause any trouble," whether trouble was caused is determined not by the one acting, but by the one receiving. For this reason, pausing to ask "How might the other person feel?" before speaking or acting is a habit worth cultivating.
During the Nature Experience Program, students will spend long hours together with their classmates. Not everything will go according to plan; there will be moments when schedules change and on-the-spot judgment is required. It is precisely in such moments that each student's "ability to think and then act" will come into play.
Right and wrong, timing, priorities, and the feelings of others — we hope our students will keep these four points in mind and grow into people who can choose their actions wisely. Watching the question displayed on the screen, the students listened attentively to the talk with earnest expressions.
Leaving the familiar grounds of school and spending two days in a new place, cooperating with friends, is an irreplaceable experience. We sincerely hope this Nature Experience Program will be, for our Year 2 students, not only an enjoyable memory but also an opportunity to begin cultivating their own "Kōdō-ryoku." As the departure day approaches, we kindly ask families to support their children with good health management at home.
