A Morning After the Rain — Year 8 Assembly on "Valuing Our Time"
The morning greeted us with clear skies after the rain. The Ōkawa River beside the school was running a little higher than usual, and our pupils arrived at school full of energy as always.
Today we held our Year 8 assembly, where one of the teachers spoke about how we use our time. She introduced the idea of a "time savings account": if one second were worth one yen, then a single day — 86,400 seconds — would give each of us 86,400 yen's worth of time every day. Unlike money, however, time cannot be carried over to the next day. Whatever we leave unused simply disappears when the day ends.
"If 86,400 yen appeared beside your pillow every morning, what would you spend it on?" Prompted by this question, pupils paused to reflect on how they spend their own time.
The talk also touched on the meaning of valuing each and every lesson. Music, in particular, is taught for just one hour a week — and within that limited time, there are things the teacher hopes to convey, and things she hopes to create together with the pupils. From here, Year 8 will also begin preparing for the chorus competition.
The assembly closed with a briefing about next week's swimming gala. An event to look forward to is drawing near.
Time spent with friends, time devoted to lessons, time spent building something up little by little — treasuring each of these moments is, in itself, a way of living out our motto: value yourself, and value the person beside you. We look forward to seeing Team Hokuryō's Year 8 pupils grow even further.
