Morning Greetings from the Old and New Student Councils, and the Year 7 Assembly: Science Awards and Choir Competition Preparations
Once again this morning, members of the old and new Student Councils stood side by side in the pilotis area, greeting everyone as they arrived. It was lovely to see this daily habit being handed down carefully from older pupils to younger ones.
Afterwards, Year 7 held their year-group assembly. It opened with awards for four Year 7 pupils who presented their work at the Science Research Presentation. Their projects, including an experiment comparing the conditions natto bacteria need to ferment using a range of plants, all grew out of everyday curiosity. The whole year group joined in congratulating their classmates on their hard work.
Next came a talk from one of the Year 7 teachers. She began by asking, "Has anything moved you recently?" and went on to say that people's hearts are often moved by surprisingly simple things. Seeing every single pupil in the year group present, with no one absent, is one of those things for her.
The talk then turned to the upcoming Choir Competition. Beautiful, well-balanced parts certainly matter, but what moves an audience most, she said, is seeing everyone sing their hearts out, mouths wide open.
She also shared a memory from her own junior high school days. Back then, there was no set after-school practice time as there is now, and it was hard to get everyone together. One day, the part leader who had been working so hard broke down in tears. Classmates then went round to call on others, and gradually more and more joined in. More than the final result, it is that moment that has stayed with her. How much passion you pour into something is what makes life richer — a message that reached the Year 7 pupils directly as they prepare to sing.
The committees also shared their announcements. The Information Committee spoke on copyright as part of "Hokuryō Net Morals", reminding everyone that downloading videos that have been uploaded without permission is a copyright infringement, just as using other people's illustrations or photos without permission is. The Student Life Committee asked everyone to check how they walk in the corridors, their language, their name badges and their greetings. The Health Committee introduced this month's theme, "Caring for Your Eyes", encouraging everyone to avoid reading in dim light or staring at screens for long periods, and to make a point of resting their eyes.
Finally, the year group's committee chair spoke about this month's goal, "The Best Team". It reflects a hope that, through Sports Day and the Choir Competition, each class and the whole year group will keep running together towards a shared goal. Mentioning the morning practices that start at around 7:45, the chair spoke to classmates in their own words: "I think people who come early are people who can give their best at anything." Another memorable message was that when things go wrong, you switch your mindset and move on to the next thing. Looking ahead to the mid-term tests, the year group also agreed on the importance of valuing not just results but the preparation itself, and of carrying on with revision after the tests are over.
There is very little time left before the Choir Competition. As the pupils listen to the voices of the classmates beside them, we wonder how each class's singing will grow. We are very much looking forward to the day itself.
