Year 9 Book Talk (Bibliobattle) Preliminary Rounds Begin (Japanese Language)
Today, the preliminary rounds of the Year 9 “Book Talk (Bibliobattle)” got under way in a Japanese language lesson in Class 3. Each class will choose one representative to go through to the final.
Bibliobattle is a book-introduction game devised in 2007 by Tadahiro Taniguchi, then a postgraduate student at Kyoto University. Presenters share what makes their chosen book special, and everyone listening votes for the one book they would most like to read. The rules could hardly be simpler. Taniguchi describes four things the activity does: it shares information about books, develops speaking skills, helps people discover good books, and builds connections between people. Research so far has reported particularly on its benefits for speaking skills, and it now appears in junior and senior high school Japanese textbooks. Bringing reading, speaking and listening together in one activity, it is a natural fit for learning in Japanese lessons.
In Class 3, pupils took turns in register order, each introducing their “favourite book” in just one minute. Some spoke from notes, some addressed the whole class without looking at anything, and others talked while referring to their tablets. Some held their books up to show the cover, while others displayed the book on their tablet screens.
The same one minute, yet every pupil approached it differently, which made the session a real pleasure to watch. Perhaps a few listeners found themselves wanting to pick up one of the books.
Bibliobattle tests not only the presenters but also the way the audience listens. The pupils of Class 3 turned towards each speaker and listened carefully right to the end, and their attentiveness was wonderful to see.
The preliminary rounds are due to continue in the other classes. Once each class has chosen its representative, the final will take place in Period 6 on Monday 2 November. We are already looking forward to seeing which book comes out on top.
