23 October – Year 9 Assembly: Carrying What We Built Through Song into What Comes Next
A week on from the Culture Festival, Year 9 gathered for a year group assembly, where the teacher who chaired the Culture Festival committee looked back on the Choral Competition and the festival.
From the moment choir practice began, the teacher said, walking past the classrooms and hearing each class sing had been something to look forward to. Even at the year group rehearsal, the singing was moving enough to give goosebumps, and on the day itself, the performances went beyond anything the words “just what you’d expect from Year 9” could capture.
What the teacher most wanted to share, though, was the journey behind that singing: preparations that began with choosing a song, conductors and accompanists who practised even when no one was watching, and classmates who sang the pieces over and over to match that effort. It was this steady build-up, the teacher reflected, that made the final performance possible and turned it into a lasting memory.
The talk then turned to next week’s Sports Day, the last of their junior high school years. Giving everything in the events themselves goes without saying, but pupils were also encouraged to value the practice and planning leading up to it, as well as their everyday lessons and school life. The hope is not only that others will say “that’s Year 9 for you”, but that pupils themselves will feel they gave it their all and that it was the best Sports Day ever. They were also reminded to remember to thank those who cheer them on and those who support the event behind the scenes. The teacher’s hopes for Year 9 came across clearly and sincerely.
Next, pupils announced the year group goal for the second term: “Dignified and Proud – The Greatest Year in Hokuryō’s History” (威風堂々~北稜史上最高の学年~). It expresses their wish to conduct themselves with confidence as the oldest year group, and to be remembered by younger pupils, long after they leave, as seniors who were truly impressive and inspiring.
The goal for November is “Discipline Yourself, and Raise Each Other Up”. With the major events of the year drawing to a close, preparation for entrance exams is about to begin in earnest. The idea is to start by getting one’s own actions in order, let the positive atmosphere one person creates spread to those around them, and grow together as a group. Pupils explained these thoughts in their own words.
From the school nurse came a reminder about eye health: to avoid looking at screens in dark places, to be careful about using smartphones and tablets too close up or for too long, and to make a conscious effort to rest their eyes.
The assembly also included awards connected with the Osaka City junior high school science research presentations. As the certificates were read out, four independent research projects were introduced, on strengthening earthquake-resistant structures, how to keep walls from collapsing, “cat tongue” (nekojita, being sensitive to hot food) and differences in the temperatures at which food tastes good, and genetics. It was a good opportunity for the whole year group to learn about what their classmates had been investigating.
Finally, there was a notice about Sports Day assembly points. Ahead of the practice during period 6 next Tuesday, pupils were asked to check in advance their marshalling area, which heat and lane they are in, and which event comes just before their own. Behind this was the teacher’s trust that Year 9 can get the movements right in a single run-through. Arriving ready, each and every one of them, also helps make the most of the limited practice time.
From the choir stage to the sports field, we look forward to seeing Year 9 carry that same strength forward.
