Year 8 Assembly — Rethinking "the Ordinary" through an Experience in Cambodia
The morning began under clear skies, and pupils arrived at school full of energy. Familiar voices filled the classrooms and corridors once again as life in the autumn term got under way. On such a morning, the Year 8 year-group assembly was held.
At the assembly, one of the teachers shared a story based on their own experience in Cambodia. The theme was something we often take for granted — what we casually call "the ordinary." After introducing Cambodia's location, culture, and landmarks such as Angkor Wat, the talk gradually turned to daily life there.
While the cities are developing rapidly, in some rural areas roads and living conditions are still far from adequate, and the chance to attend primary or lower secondary school is not guaranteed for every child. The teacher also spoke of the history of the Pol Pot era, when many lives were lost and teachers and intellectuals were persecuted.
Having encountered that history and seen local schools first-hand, the teacher reflected: being able to come to school each day, to have teachers nearby, and to learn alongside friends, take part in clubs and join school events, is by no means something to be found everywhere in the world. The pupils listened quietly and attentively.
The long autumn term has begun. There may well be days when school feels hard. Even so, rather than treating what we have simply as "ordinary," the hope is that each pupil will pour themselves into even one thing in their own way, and treasure each day — that was the message shared.
Even in the most everyday moments, there is much worth cherishing. Hokuryō Junior High School will keep striving to be a school that each pupil "wants to return to tomorrow," walking forward together as Team Hokuryō this term too.
