Hospitality in a Bowl of Tea (Day Two of the Osaka City Junior High School Cultural Festival)
Today, Sunday, October 25, marked the second day of the Osaka City Junior High School Cultural Festival. At 11:30 a.m., our Tea Ceremony Club began its demonstration in a room on the third floor of Osaka City Central Public Hall.
For this tea gathering, guests sat on chairs while watching the tea being prepared on tatami mats. I also joined as a guest and enjoyed a bowl of tea. The chair seating was easier on my legs, allowing me to relax and appreciate both the preparation and the tea itself.
Before the tea was served, a student representing the hosts explained the hanging scroll displayed behind them, the flowers arranged for the tea gathering, and the sweets being served. The explanation was clear and thoughtful, helping guests understand the meaning and choices behind each element.
Learning about the scroll, flowers, and sweets before drinking the tea added another dimension to the experience: the pleasure of appreciating the tea gathering as a whole. Watching the students’ movements as they prepared the tea, I felt that their regular practice teaches more than the formal procedures. It also teaches them how to help others feel comfortable and welcome. In a corner of the historic Central Public Hall, their hospitality gave us a peaceful moment to enjoy.
At the entrance, I came across students from our Technology and Crafts Club, so we took a commemorative photograph. With the impressive Central Public Hall behind them, everyone struck a pose of their own. For these students, who participated through their creations—including the wooden pieces introduced yesterday—I hope the photograph will become a reminder of their time at the festival.
Research presentations, creative exhibitions, and hospitality at the tea gathering: over these two days, students shared the results of their work in different fields with a wider audience beyond our school. To all the participating students, and everyone involved in teaching, preparation, and organization, thank you for your efforts over these two days.
