Whole-School Assembly: Awards and Looking Ahead to Sports Day
On Tuesday 27 October, we held a whole-school assembly.
The assembly opened with an awards presentation. Pupils were recognised for their excellent results in the 22nd Osakana Fish Painting Competition, for their technology project presentations at the 35th Osaka Municipal Junior High Schools’ General Cultural Festival held last weekend, and, in the case of the Science Club, for presenting their science research.
The principal then spoke to the members of the student council and the various committees who took on new roles at last week’s appointment ceremony: “I’d like you to work not only for those who supported you, but for everyone.” He also asked the rest of the school to support these pupils and work alongside them.
Next, the talk turned to Sports Day, which takes place this Friday. Some of us are fast runners; others are less confident. What matters is making it a day where everyone can feel safe to give their very best. If a teammate drops the baton in a relay, do you snap, “What are you doing?!”, or do you call out, “Come on, keep going!”? That single moment can make all the difference to how a teammate feels.
Psychological safety, where you can take on a challenge without fear of being blamed if things go wrong, and empathy, putting yourself in someone else’s shoes. The principal asked everyone to hold on to these two ideas and to cheer one another on.
He also reminded us that the phrase we often use, “take care of the person next to you”, doesn’t only mean the classmate at the next desk. It also includes the people we pass on the way to and from school, and neighbours in our community whose names we may never know. Walking side by side across the whole pavement with friends might be fun, but it could leave others unable to get past. He asked everyone to think about the people around them and act accordingly.
Finally, a member of staff spoke about graffiti that has been found near the school. The teacher stressed how serious it is to damage public property or to write words that hurt others, and added that anyone who has done something wrong should not hide it, but face up to their actions and talk to a teacher they trust.
Just three days to go until Sports Day. We look forward to seeing every pupil give it their all, and to a day full of encouragement and mutual support.
