Year 9 Cooking Class — Making Rice Flour and Kinako Steamed Buns!
Today, all Year 9 classes took part in a Home Economics cooking practical. Each class took turns in the cooking room, hour by hour, to make rice flour and kinako (roasted soybean flour) steamed buns. The warm, nutty aroma of kinako filled the room throughout the day.
The photos show Class 4 in action. Wearing aprons and chef's caps, students carefully whisked the batter in their mixing bowls. They checked the recipe as they went, communicating with their group members to keep each step on track. When it came time to pour the batter into the paper cups, you could see them concentrating intently, determined not to spill a drop.
After the practical, students from Class 3-2 kindly brought a freshly steamed bun to the principal's office. It came with a handwritten note on a purple card that read "For our Principal." The two students arrived with big smiles and cheerful peace signs — a truly heartwarming moment. The steamed bun itself was soft and fluffy, with a gentle kinako flavour that was simply delicious.
For our Year 9 students, there are only a few cooking practicals left in their time at junior high school. The experience of working together with friends to create something from scratch is sure to become a treasured memory. We hope parents will ask their children about today's class over dinner tonight.
